About Hedieh
New York City-based Hedieh Sorouri is a portrait and nature photographer whose art venerates the people and cultures of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries. The recent recipient of a master’s in digital photography from New York’s prestigious School of Visual Arts, Sorouri makes artwork that challenges Western media’s often negative representation of the MENA identity by celebrating the beauty of its underrepresented lives. Her background in English and creative writing also comes into play in her most recent fine art project, a series of self-portraits that represent her faith as a hijab-wearing Muslim woman through pairings with traditional Persian poetry. These images also explore the intimate, symbiotic intersection between humans and nature, and will be exhibited this fall at New York’s SVA Gramercy Gallery.
